About Me

Hi, I’m Kiyo, the creator of Halal Japanese Recipes.

I am not a professional chef — and that is exactly why I started this site.

My journey into halal-friendly Japanese cooking began through my daughter’s international school in Malaysia. One day, the school held a cultural food event where mothers were asked to bring dishes from their home countries — with halal requirements.

I decided to make halal chicken wings, inspired by a classic Japanese recipe.
Traditionally, the seasoning uses mirin, which contains alcohol. Instead, I experimented with a simple substitute using vinegar and honey.

The result?
The children loved it — and it opened my eyes.

That experience made me realize how often Japanese food relies on ingredients like alcohol, mirin, and pork, even in dishes we consider “everyday food.” At the same time, I discovered that with small adjustments, Japanese recipes can still be authentic, delicious, and halal-friendly.

I have also lived in Kyoto, where I saw many travelers from around the world, including Muslim visitors, enjoying Japanese culture and food. Some had fond memories of dishes they tried while traveling in Japan. Others discovered Japanese cuisine through restaurants in their own countries.

Through this site, I hope to help you:

  • Recreate Japanese flavors you enjoyed while traveling
  • Try Japanese dishes you’ve always been curious about
  • Discover new favorites that fit comfortably into a halal kitchen

All recipes on this site are designed for real home cooking:

  • No pork
  • No alcohol
  • Easy-to-find ingredients
  • Simple, healthy, and family-friendly

My goal is not perfection, but accessibility — to help Muslim families enjoy Japanese food with confidence and joy, right at home.

If my recipes help you discover a new favorite dish, or bring a taste of Japan to your table, that would make me very happy.

Thank you for cooking with me.

Kiyo
